I have been playing with the terrapin mine for the last few days. It is a super cool data device supporting composite video out for photo slideshows, a 10gig usb hard disk (I think you can crack the case and add a larger drive) mp3 player and dialup, ethernet or wireless ftp server. I do not like the management program as it requires a machine running either mac os or windows, I run neither so I have to take this thing to school or a friend to do any config on it (there may be a comand line config hack available). We will see how it works on the road.

Just got a Terapin Mine data device while 2 years old there is no gadget that is quite so full featured, OTOH it is 7 inches long and 3.5 wide not small. This is a combo MP3 player, digital picture viewer, and portable 10gig computer storage device. It seems to have so many bells and whistles I will have to try them all out. this may be good enought to replace a laptop for a music and photo storage hub, it can als dial out or use a DSL/Cable modem line to send and receive files over the internet. I will have to see how this works as a travel partner.

I just met with my friend Danny House who will be coming to shabatt dinner in two weeks. Danny had two motorola v-66 phones. We tried to use my unlocking software to make them able to use prepaid sim chips in Europe, Japan, and Israel. Sadly my serial cable is having trouble, I have another so we will need to meet again soon.
It is important if you want to use your GSM phone in Israel or with any other sim chip than supplied by your phone provider that the phone be unlocked. Another thing that is important to research is that your phone will work on 900/1800/1900 mhz if not you are stuck using the phone only in US, Mexico, and Canada even if you unlock the phone.

What to carry when you are schlepping about and want to stay connected, here is what is in my pack.
Laptop, Just an old one running linux
chargers and cables for EVERYTHING including the cellphone so I can get online using the serial modem cable
Mobile Phone (use an unlocked GSM phone because this is the global standard and you can use it in Israel with Orange or Cellcom)
WIFI card and high power directiona antenna (the antenna squeezes in a weak signal when you are a little far from a public hotspot)
"Stinger" imersion water heater get the 110/220v version because in the airport they sometimes charge 2euros for a cup of hot watrer
Extra batteries bacause airplanes never seem to have the air adapter installed in my seat
12v to 120v power inverter, now I don't have to carry the heavy auto air adaptor instead I have a lighter plug--> airplane adaptor for the inverter

Ok the blog is setup, now to create some content.
